MVSA NEWS – November 2009

From Our President:

Dear Mission Valley Friends,

October went by in a blur of activity surrounding the Halloween Carnival. It was without a doubt an ENORMOUS success! I loved seeing all the smiling ghouls and ghosts enjoying the good weather, games and food. Our carnival chairs Charlotte Yee, David Lee, and Shaista Yasmin did a wonderful job pulling it all together. An event this size (about 1000 wristbands sold) requires over a hundred volunteers. Coordinating all that needs to be done is a very big accomplishment.

Thank you to everyone who donated their time, money, costumes and candy. You were all great! We couldn’t have pulled off this huge event without our high school volunteers and Peggy Kwan who coordinated their hard work. Thank You, Mr. Rivera, for once again volunteering your entire day to the creation and running of the Haunted Tunnel, not to mention pulling it all back down. Thanks also go out to Dr. Bossi and Mrs. Carlson for volunteering to judge the carnival costume parade. If you enjoyed all the wonderful food and shopping at the Little Shop of Horrors, aka the General Store, you have the Mission San Jose Elementary Carnival Chair, Greg Green, to thank. For helping us throughout the day, I want to personally thank our tireless custodian, Mr. Bonzon. Thank you all!

But October was not all about the carnival. We also had our first Fine Arts Mini Experience, FAME, week. The FAME committee, lead by Anne Kwok and Wei-Chien Wu, bring knowledge about great artists and composers to our students each month.

October 13th was our school picture day. The Picture Day Committee volunteers along with their chairperson, Suman Gill, assisted our teachers in getting all the students to the MUR to have their pictures taken.

Our membership drive concluded on October 9th, and our Membership Committee volunteers have been working hard at entering all the data from your membership forms into our database. The directory will be coming your way very shortly, along with your membership incentive prizes.

The Technology Committee, lead by Paul Rogers, held its first Net Day of this school year on October 17th to continue their efforts to connect teacher computers to classroom TVs, giving teachers the ability to share with their entire class information they have brought up on their computer screens.

Also, starting in October, we now have a new newsletter editor. After putting the newsletter together myself for many years, I am very grateful to Promila Rastogi for volunteering to take over this task.

Our next meeting is next week. Come and tell us how you think we are doing. I hope to see you there.

Filiz Crocker

MVSA Meeting:

You are invited to attend the MVSA meeting next week. All Mission Valley families are encouraged to participate. We are working on many projects and would love to hear your opinions. Babysitting is provided.

Tuesday, November 10

Teachers’ Lounge by the School Office

7:00 PM

Your suggestions and ideas are always welcome. If you can’t make the meeting, please email any board member. We will gladly bring your suggestions to the meeting.

Have You Joined the MVSA?

The MVSA is our nonprofit parent/teacher organization. The membership drive is our biggest fundraiser and all of the funds raised go right back into Mission Valley Elementary. If you would like to find out more about how your donations are spent, please join us at our monthly meetings the second Tuesday of each month, or visit our website and look for the Mission Valley School Association link in the main menu on the left.

E-scrip information:

Help our school by enrolling in the eScrip program. Merchants like Safeway, Albertson's, Raley's, Macy's and many more donate a percentage of your purchases to the MVSA. It is safe, easy and above all costs you nothing. Safeway requires us each to renew our enrollment in the program every year. If you have not enrolled or renewed, please do so at escrip.com. For more information on how to help the MVSA through the eScrip program, please contact the eScrip Comittee Chair, Shalesh Jawa ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Halloween Carnival:

- from Charlotte Yee, Shaista Yasmin and David Lee, Carnival Committee Chairs

On October 24th, Mission Valley Elementary was transformed into a world of ghosts and goblins for the annual Halloween Carnival, a joint event with Mission San Jose Elementary. The event, which featured a variety of carnival games, two bounce houses, lessons on flower arrangement and cookie decorating, martial arts demonstration, haunted tunnel, fortune teller’s booth, and costume parade, was attended by hundreds of children and adults this year.

We had an amazing volunteer turnout this year, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who volunteered their time at the event – decorating the school, running a carnival game, working the will-call booth, etc. Special thanks go out to the following sub-committee members who took an active part in planning the carnival:

Decorations Sub-committee:

Susan Hu, Radha, Margaret Normoyle (SDC Instructor), Rita Sair

Games Sub-committee:

Filiz Crocker, Roopa Panuganti, Swati Pruthi, Mimi Chen, Sophia Sun, Rebecca Lu

Haunted Tunnel Sub-committee:

David Shen, Paul Rogers, Ahn Vo, Jamie Wong (Mission Valley YMCA Staff), Ted Avtar (Irvington H.S. Student)

Ticket Sub-committee:

Theresa Bettencourt, Anne Rogers, Vijay Anisetti, Sita Bharathala, Rebecca Yang

High School Volunteer Coordinator:

Peggy Kwan

We would also like to thank Dr. Bossi and many Mission Valley teachers who volunteered their time to make this event a success:

Steve Lotz, Sheri Carlson, Cathy Howard, Jessica Sonoda, Shirin Aidun, Linda Hoffman

Finally, we would like to give a big THANK YOU to 6th grade teacher, Michael Rivera, for his energy, dedication, and creativity in coordinating the construction of a very elaborate and spooky haunted tunnel.

To those who came to this year’s Halloween Carnival, we hope you had fun!

Science Camp Fundraising

—from Peggy Kwan and Chris Nagata, Committee Chairs

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

You've probably all received your Innisbrook products for the Science Camp Fundraising. Please contact us if there are any problems with the products you've received. The amount each participating student raised has been calculated. A letter regarding how much your student raised and the remaining balance of the camp tuition will be sent home soon. Thank you for your encouragement and support toward your students for this activity.

Safety Patrol:

—from Vick Chan, Mission Valley Safety Patrol Team Lead

Thanks to the generosity of the MVSA and the Halloween Committee, students on the Safety Patrol team had a great day at the Halloween Carnival with their complimentary wristbands.

Many thanks to Ms. Sonoda, who has volunteered to be the teacher Safety Patrol team coordinator this year. She allows the team to use her room for meetings and is a liaison between the school and the team on Safety Patrol related tasks.

We have one parent volunteer position opening for Friday mornings.  Please email Vick Chan ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) if you are interested.

Please be reminded that the traffic control and drive thru/drop off procedure is available on the MVSA website for your review. www.mvsa-fremont.org, under the “Main Menu”, click on “Our School”, then “Map”, then “pickup/dropoff zones”. http://www.mvsa-fremont.org/images/pdf/Traffic_control_and_student_drop_off_procedure_20090901.pdf

Here are few reminders I would like to point out:

· Please DO NOT stop or park in front of the cones.  This is a safety concern; blocking access to emergency vehicles that come to our school in case of emergencies.

· Please DO NOT make left turns from Mc Kay St. into the cone lane on Denise St., which is prone to danger.

· If you utilize the drive-thru, please be considerate to other parents by driving forward so we can accommodate as many cars as possible.

· When approaching the school zone, please drive slowly and pay attention to the kids on the street.

· While in the school zone, please DO NOT park in the wrong direction or make illegal U-turns.

Quiz: Can you guess on average how many cars pass through our school drive-thru lane every morning?  (The answer will be in the next Newsletter)
