Our website(s): A full evolution of change

Thursday, July 09 2009 20:43 | Written by MVSA Web Admin | Print | E-mail

Prior to  2007, there was one website for both Mission Valley Elementary and for MVSA.  It  was hosted by the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD).  The technology required manual coding and FTP upload, which MVSA volunteers provided to the school.

In 2007, MVSA member donations made possible the building of a new content management system (CMS) on the internet.  As the system was being built, FUSD contracted with an outside company to provide a CMS for the entirety of the district.  In 2008, FUSD launched its own system.  MVSA retained its system (and this domain).

As a result, Mission Valley parents have the benefit of two different types of websites: one for official school communication from school staff, and one for association activities and involvement.  MVSA-fremont.org is designed to provide an online community for those with ties to Mission Valley Elementary and with content relevant to the association itself.

There are several important distinctions to be made between these sites.  1.  The Mission Valley FUSD site at http://www.fremont.k12.ca.us/mve/site/default.asp is limited to what has been approved by paid school staff.  2.  The MVSA site is open to what the membership has agreed upon, but is also limited by what the bylaws of the membership are.  For MVSA, the bylaws are specific as to the nature of its mission: it is a non-political entity which, "shall not engage in activities tending or attempting to influence any national, state, or local legislation; nor participate or intervene in any way in any political campaign; nor contravene or usurp the prerogatives of the Fremont Unified School District or the employees thereof."

Mission Valley stakeholders may see  overlap of function between FUSD and the association, as well as areas that do not overlap, such as taking a position on local funding measures, something that MVSA by its very nature may not do.  Given that there will always be a stakeholder interest in becoming more active in educational advocacy outside of what MVSA and/or FUSD may have available, your web admin directs you to one of her earlier sandbox sites, http://www.mybayareakid.com, which has been reinvented as a means for the community to communicate on educational issues affecting Fremont and other Bay Area public schools.  The statements contained on the external site reflect those of their authors and MVSA neither promotes nor dissuades users from its authors' viewpoints.
